Case Studies

Majestic Wine

Retail still forms the foundation of economies around the world. Yet rapid fluctuations in real estate and online shopping, not to mention the global pandemic, have thrown much of the industry into turmoil. Retail has always required leaders with deep strategic vision, and now even more so. In 2019, we acquired British retailer Majestic Wine, after seeing the opportunity for this online and brick-and-mortar brand. Majestic Wine had a core following but was experiencing stagnant growth after its 2015 merger with Naked Wines and a shift from prioritizing physical stores to online shopping.

We partnered closely with a strong management team and supported a strategic return to the Company’s brick-and-mortar roots, moving against prevailing trends, evolving the Company’s operations. In 2020, at the height of a global pandemic, Majestic Wine hired over 250 new employees and opened five new stores.

Fortress and the Majestic Wine management team have invested heavily in re-embedding the Company’s unique culture.

United Pacific

Gas stations and convenience stores are everywhere, and nearly every consumer interacts with one. But in the western US, there has historically been no major gas-and-convenience operator that offered customers a trusted regional brand.

In 2014, Fortress acquired the United Oil chain and then the Pacific Convenience & Fuels chain, merging the two to form United Pacific. Our more than 20 years investing in retail and real estate, combined with our broad asset base, allowed us to source the unique transaction and provided for a complex deal structure aimed at benefitting and protecting stakeholders.

In January 2024, we combined the operations of United Pacific and Alta Convenience, forming a platform that now operates 674 retail outlets and is the largest independent gasoline retailer in the western US. The merged company sells fuel from the 76, Conoco, Phillips 66, Shell, Chevron and United Oil brands. Plus, it offers a wide array of convenience items through its Rocket branded chain of convenience stores. Over less than a decade, United Pacific and Alta Convenience have unlocked synergies and efficiencies with the support of Fortress resources and a strong management team.
